Current codes and construction practices often result in tighter buildings. Along with saving energy, improving comfort, and durability, these tighter building practices reduce infiltration– the uncontrolled leakage of air into a building. Our current energy code includes specific air sealing requirements.  In many cases, these requirements include blower door testing of structures to verify the building has reduced leakage, in line with the level of tightness required by the code.

As building tightness is increased and leakage reduced, we must also consider ventilation– bringing in fresh outside air and controlling the contaminants that result from occupying buildings. These contaminants include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, chemicals, smoke, moisture, odors, and more.

The class discussion will cover the following topics:

• Residential ventilation calculations.
• Mandatory mechanical ventilation.
• Combustion air from inside or outside.
• Open combustion: appliance vs direct vent.
• Tempering make-up air: furnace heat exchanger temperature rise.
• HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) and ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator)
• Make-up Air: Why, when, and can we provide it with the ventilation systems.
• Ventilation: Natural, mechanical, whole house, balanced, supply, and exhaust.
• Find out why building a leaky thermal envelope or an open a window isn’t enough.
