GETTING TO ZERO ENERGY READY: INSULATION, AIR SEALING, AND HEAT PUMP

Start Date: 15th June, 2021
End Date: 15th June, 2021
Description:

June 15, 2021 - Virtual On-Site Training

3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Join Habitat for Humanity of Summit and Wasatch Counties, Utah Clean Energy, Nexant, AeroBarrier, and Just Right Heating & Cooling for a virtual on-site training to learn about the steps Habitat for Humanity is taking to maximize efficiency, promote energy affordability, and reduce emissions in one of its zero energy ready homes. The virtual on-site training will cover:
  • Insulation and air sealing in a Zero Energy Ready home. How to effectively insulate the slab, walls, floors and ceilings and to seal the home to meet Zero Energy Ready standards.
  • EVR for Zero Energy Ready: Airtight construction also requires mechanical ventilation with an ERV to provide fresh air while maintaining efficiency of heating and cooling.
  • Sizing and selecting a “cold climate” heat pump is doable with careful attention to optimize performance for Summit County’s cold climate.
Shellie Barrus, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Summit & Wasatch Counties Shellie has a 17-year background in affordable housing development with Habitat for Humanity, which led her to investigate how energy savings could really benefit their homeowners long term affordability with relatively little up-front costs. This led her down the path to see that sustainability and energy saving are best for the planet as well.  She started incorporating sustainable builds into Habitat builds back in 2012 when they completed 2 LEED Platinum homes in Old Town Park City.  Habitat is currently building two Zero Energy Ready Homes in Summit County. Christopher Cox, Engineering Manager, Nexant Chris Cox is a professional engineer with Nexant in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He has supported high performance residential building design since his involvement with the LEED Gold Certified, University of Utah Marriott Honors Housing project in 2011.  Chris currently leads a team of engineers that support building owners in incorporating high performance design and construction to achieve Energy Star Certification, Green Enterprise Certification, and DOE’s Zero Energy Ready status.  Chris is an advocate for cost-effective efficiency that ensures healthy, safe, and resilient buildings.  In addition to his service at Nexant, Chris instructs the Building Energy Simulations course offered through Salt Lake Community College’s Energy Management Program. Dan Dearden, Owner, Just Right Heating and Cooling Dan is a licenced contractor with 44 years in the HVAC industry in various positions including technical, managerial, and ownership. Dan has also served as an independent consultant and an instructor and/or board member at the Davis Applied Technology College, Fortis College, and Salt Lake Community College. He holds numerous professional and industry certifications including HVAC/R from Utah Valley University, Business Management from the University of Utah, as well as N.A.T.E., RMGA, and ACCA and authored Quick Duct, a guide to simple duct sizing. Kevin Emerson, MSc, Energy Efficiency Program Director, Utah Clean Energy Kevin is the lead for energy efficiency and building decarbonization programs, policy, and regulatory activities for Utah Clean Energy. Kevin has spearheaded efforts to pass local and state policies to enable innovative financing for clean energy projects, improvements to energy codes for Utah homes and buildings, advanced energy transparency for residential, municipal and commercial buildings, and championed policies to expand electric vehicle incentives and infrastructure. He is a regular participant in Demand-side Management Advisory Groups for both Rocky Mountain Power and Dominion Energy. Previously, Kevin served as a public member of Utah’s Uniform Building Code Commission, a Co-Facilitator of the ILFI Great Basin Collaborative, a consultant on Salt Lake City’s Project Skyline and Elevate Buildings initiatives. He also co-chaired the Building Efficiency Committee for the State of Utah’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Plan, and served on the Energy Management Program Advisory Committee for Salt Lake Community College. Kevin graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Utah and an M.Sc. in Environmental Sustainability from the University of Edinburgh. Mitchell Spence, Owner, AeroBarrier Utah Furniture designer and ski-bum turned developer/contractor; Owner of AeroBarrier Utah. Mitchell’s development/contractor company built Utah's first Net Positive all-electric Community. Mitchell purchased AeroBarrier because it is the low-cost guaranteed result for air sealing. Mitch holds a B100 Construction License; has 25 years in the construction industry, he is passionate about beautifying urban areas with functional infill; focusing on clean energy, smart design, and reducing poverty through education. Expertise: Building Science and Assemblies Design, In-fill projects, negotiations, entitlements, site development through final construction.
